LBCC - 2010 Commencement Ceremony

LONG BEACH, CA -- Long Beach City College's (LBCC) 2010 Commencement Ceremony was held at Veterans Stadium on May 26. The ceremony honored LBCC's class of 2010 which consisted of 1,068 graduates who received Associate degrees and 570 students who earned certificates this academic year. U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis gave the Keynote Address at the Ceremony. Secretary Solis was confirmed as Secretary of Labor on February 24, 2009. Prior to confirmation as Secretary of Labor, Secretary Solis represented the 32nd Congressional District in California, a position she held from 2001 -- 2009. In the Congress, she authored the Green Jobs Act which provided funding for "green" collar job training for veterans, displaced workers, at risk youth, and individuals in families under 200 percent of the federal poverty line. Solis was first elected to public office in 1985 as a member of the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees and she served in the California State Assembly from 1992 to 1994 before making history by becoming the first Latina elected to the California State Senate. Long Beach Community College District (LBCCD) Superintendent-President Eloy Ortiz Oakley and LBCCD Board President Dr. Tom Clark each offered congratulatory remarks and awarded the Degrees and Certificates to the students during the ceremony.
