The Role of Cognitive Function in Assessing and Treating Psychiatric Disorders
Presented by: Massachusetts General Hospital
Topics of discussion include: identifying functional and neuroanatomical correlates of attention, executive function and integrative processing of memory, emotion and cognition; elucidating the role of cognitive function and potential therapeutic interventions in affective illness, ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders and psychosis; and describing a potential rationale for the use of multi-modal therapeutic interventions including pharmacologic agents that may affect cognition.

This program will describe the clinical approach to the new prescribing guidelines for the use of anitdepressant and antipsychotic compounds, discuss the methodological basis for assessing the relative role of the placebo response in evaluating the efficacy of psychotropic medication treatment and clinical trial study data, identify the relative attributes of SNRIs vs. SSRIs, elucidate the role of atypical antipsychotics and anticonvulsant mood stabilizers in the treatment of affective illness as compared to traditional adjunctive medication strategies. |
