Political Economy Days Wednesday, October 20, 2010 Mark Abajian Mark Abajian is Associate Professor of Economics at Mesa College. He Ranjeeta Basu Dr. Basu has a B.A. from St. Xavier College in Bombay India and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside. She has been department chair of the Economics Department at California State University – San Marcos where she teaches Economic Development. She has published several articles. Gary Jacobson Gary Jacobson is Professor of Political Science at UCSD. He earned his PhD in Political Science from Yale University. Professor Jacobson is widely regarded as the nation’s most eminent authority on Congressional elections. He is the author or co-author of numerous books and articles, including The Politics of Congressional Elections, Money in Congressional Elections and The Logic of American Politics. Yvonne Anderson Yvonne Anderson holds a B.A. in History from San Diego State University, as well as an M.A. in History from Andrews University in Michigan. Professor Anderson taught World History and Western Civilization at Palomar College for 29 years. She traveled and Researched in Russia during the era of the Communist Party era of the Soviet Union. Aaron Finkle Aaron Finkle is Assistant Professor of Economics at California State University – San Marcos. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington in 2004. His main area of research interest is Law and Economics. He has four articles published and four more in progress. He has won two awards – one for his research and one for his teaching. Darren Schreiber Darren Schreiber is Assistant Professor of Political Science at UCSD. He holds a Ph D in political science from UCLA and is a specialist in political psychology, cognition theory, and American politics. He has published numerous journal articles in the area of political neuro-science. Thursday, October 21, 2010 Stephan Haggard Stephan Haggard is Lawrence and Sallye Krause Professor of Korea-Pacific Studies and Director of the Korea Pacific Program at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at UCSD. He holds B.A, M.A. and Ph.D degrees in Political Science from UC Berkeley. He is the author, or co-author, of dozens of books and journal articles on Korea, Asian politics, foreign policy and political economy. Bill Jahnel Bill Jahnel is Associate Professor of History and the History advisor at Palomar College. He holds a Master’s Degree in History from Rice University and a B.A. in History and English from Austin College with dual honors. He has been the recipient of various teaching awards, including the Anthony Chee Lifetime Achievement Award, a three-time winner of the Innovation in Teaching Award from Houston Community College, and the Distinguished Faculty Award from Palomar College. This talk is based on a small portion of his sabbatical report from spring of 2010 and colorfully titled in order to draw interest in his future class Homosexuality in the United States: History and Origins, to be offered in the foreseeable future. Matthew Estes Matthew Estes is Associate Professor of History at Palomar College. He holds an M.A. in History from San Diego State University. Professor Estes specializes in Japanese-American History, U.S-Asian Foreign Policy History and the WWII internment era. He is a two-time finalist for Palomar College’s Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dan Hallin Dan Hallin is Professor of Communication and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at UCSD. He is the author of several books and journal articles. Professor Hallin's research concerns political communication and the role of the news media in democratic politics. He has written on the media and war, including Vietnam, Central America, and the Gulf War. He has written on television coverage of elections, demonstrating the shrinking "sound bite" and offering an interpretation of its meaning for political journalism. His new research focuses on comparative analysis of the news media's role in the public sphere, concentrating on Europe and Latin America. Francine Busby and Sen. Mark Wyland Francine Busby is the Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate for the 50th Congressional District. She has previously served as School Board Trustee for the Cardiff Unified School District, as well as Vice-Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party. Mark Wyland represents the 38th district in the California State Senate, where he has served since 2007. He previously represented the 74th district in the California State Assembly from 2001-2007.Sen. Wyland holds an M.A. in Political Science from Boston College.
