"Problem-Based Learning and Deep Learning for Success in the 21st Century"

Jane Ostrander
PI, Destination PBL Project
Truckee Meadows Community College
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Researchers, educators, and employers have identified a broad collection of cognitive,
interpersonal, & intrapersonal 21st C competencies tied to success in life, school, and work. Our challenge as educators is to provide our students with opportunities to master these competencies, so that they will be successful. Problem-Based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that challenges students to solve authentic problems and master 21st C competencies through deep, complex learning experiences

After a brief overview of PBL and 21st C Capabilities, participants and facilitators will address the following questions: What does PBL in a classroom look like? What does a scenario look like? How might we use PBL in our classroom? What are obstacles & solutions for transforming our instruction with PBL? Where can we find resources and tools to help? What are some possible Next Steps? Participants will develop ideas for potential scenarios and tasks appropriate for their classrooms and SLOs. Co-Presenter: Judy Fredrickson, Ph.D., Faculty, TMCC and co-PI, Destination PBL project

Ideally participants would have access to the internet so that they could explore resources,
examine existing scenarios and tasks in our learnpbl.com library, and, if time permits, begin using the online task builder.
