Global Studies Talk, Dr. Matthew Spangler, 11/10/2021

To mark International Education Week 2021, SJSU Performance Studies professor Matthew Spangler gave a talk entitled "Between the Idealized and the Undeserving: Representing Refugees through the Literary and Performing Arts." Dr. Spangler began with a history and definition of the term "refugee" and then looked at various representations of refugee stories in the performing arts, some of which involved refugees as performers. Dr. Spangler also talked about the ethics of doing this work, whether due to the playwright not being a migrant or due to the fact that these stories will be consumed by privileged audiences
